Speaking for all canines, I feel it’s important to list the top ten dog movies of all time! Believe me, dogs are the stars of more films than you know. It was tough to pick out the top 10, but I have done my best.
Let me know if I have missed one, but I am pawsitive you will agree with my choices.
Incredible Journey (1963) We will start off with an incredible film about an incredible story about three incredible animals. Too incredible? Nah. This is the story of a cat and two dogs, who lose their humans when they are all on vacation. Can they find their way home? This is an epic film that’s sure to bring a tear or two. Of course the dogs lead the way (NOT THE CAT!) |
As Good As It Gets (1997) Verdell, a Brussels Griffon is instrumental in changing the life of a romance novelist with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Wow. The things dogs have to do for humans. But, that’s why we’re here! |
Lady and the Tramp (1955 or 2019) Whether you prefer the old-school animation or the newer look, Lady and the Tramp is a love story with a happy ending. Some humans get helped along the way too. Plus I’ve heard that people love the story of love between Lady and Tramp. It’s a win win! |
Lassie (2005) Timmy is not spending time in the well for this more modern take on the splendid classic Lassie. She does however have a harrowing 500-mile journey to get back to the humans she loves. Hmmm. Long journey…. Overcoming amazing odds…. Locating her humans despite it all. Sound familiar?? (See Incredible Journey!) |
101 Dalmatians (1996) Some humans think this is about two humans trying to foil the kidnapping of Dalmatian puppies. While that is partly true, it is mostly about Pongo and Perdy teaching the humans that together they can do anything. Dogs know best and when humans listen, things go better! |
Benji (1974) Benji is living the good life when two human kids he loves are kidnapped. (Another kidnapping?) Benji to the rescue! He outwits the bad guys and saves the day! Pretty amazing for a tiny guy. But he has spunk and loves his people. |
Best in Show (2000) This is a hilarious mockumentary about crazy humans vying for #1 in the world of dog shows. I have actually been to a dog show for Shelties, though I did not compete. I thought all the dogs got their humans to sprint around the circle rather nicely. Of course, Shelties are herding dogs, so what would you expect? Get ready to howl with delight! |
Isle of Dogs (2018) A wonderful stop motion animation about dogs guiding a human boy to his canine BFF. Naturally the dogs are the heroes in this world screwed up by people. Leave it to the dogs to get things squared away! A fun and beautifully animated film for all. |
Old Yeller (1957) Dogs always show up when humans need them most. That’s the story of Old Yeller. He protects the family and gives his life for his humans. Have tissues nearby on this one! At least he doesn’t have to travel 500 miles for this one! |
Marley & Me (2008) How could you pick any other film for #1? Marley spends his life teaching his humans important life lessons, especially about why owning a dog is the best thing ever. Of course, all dogs are professionals at teaching life lessons, especially about having fun, living in the now and loving life. Marly is a must-see whether you are a dog or a human! |
